sttowersm.jpg (105962 bytes) What did "Gardy Loo" mean and how old is the New River?

Find the answers in our new gallery telling the fascinating history of water supply and usage in London. From Roman times to the Thames Water Ring Main (there’s a slice of it to walk through) you can learn about the battle against cholera and how the toshers made a living by scavenging in the sewers "down below". There’s much more to see and do -come and explore for yourself

CHARLES DICKENS WAS AMAZED

when he visited our magnificent 19th century pumping station in 1850. Today you can follow in his footsteps and find out why he described the Grand Junction 90 inch engine, now the world’s largest working beam engine, as "a monster!". Our outstanding collection of water pumping engines can be seen in action every weekend, and includes steam, diesel and water powered engines. Originally built to supply water to Londoners, the museum is now acknowledged as the most important historic site of the water industry in Britain.
