The Northolt Lions club forms part of the largest service
organisation in the world. Our motto is "We Serve" and were founded in
1917 in the United States. Whilst concentrating mainly within our local areas we
also collaborate with the other clubs, (80,000 world wide with over 1,400,000
million members) on international projects.
The work done Internationally occurs in several ways, such as
:-
- Campaign Sight First, with it's 3 year objective of raising
over US$130M to go towards the eradication of all preventable blindness
throughout the world. This project will end in June 1994.
- Setting up eye camps in the third world to treat eye
diseases such as Glycoma, Cataract removal, etc.
- To collect spectacles and sending these out to centres for
distribution in Africa and Asia. The spectacles first being sorted and
graded before distribution.
- Setting up a foundation for mobile health clinics to
promote health care (prevention is better than cure).
- Hosting of children from around the world to foster a sense
of good will and understanding between all nations of the world.
- Medic Alert which is the central organisation to record
details of persons with specific medical problems, allergies etc. and for
the assistance of medical personnel, doctors etc. when such persons are in
need of treatment. The recipient wears a bracelet with a coded number which
can be referred to the central unit for immediate advice.
- Funds are donated from our International Fund to those
areas suffering natural disasters, flooding, earthquakes etc. The monies
being given to the nearest LIONS club to ensure the proper and effective use
thereof.
Within the UK LIONS International provide support for local
and national needs such as :-
- Sponsoring local charities, hospices, children's homes.
- Providing diabetes screening services.
- Donating to specific causes.
- Youth sponsorship, i.e. for fellowships in projects of
their own choice in association with Lloyds Bank, football teams etc.
Locally the LIONS club of Northolt, as well as scribing to
some of the above, also provide support to the local community as follows :-
- Joining other local clubs to raise the £12,000 needed for
Mandeville School, a school for handicapped children, for a Spa Pool.
- Holding monthly film shows for the elderly, ferrying them
from their own homes to the local hall using our own transport.
- Monthly visits to the local sports centre for handicapped
children.
- Outing for disadvantaged children.
- Outing for OAPs to local shows and exhibitions.
- Gardening, shopping, decorating etc. working in conjunction
with Age Concern.
- Guide dogs for the blind.
- Collection and distribution of food parcels at Christmas.
