Countryside Weekend

Note: The Countryside week-end will not be held this year (2003)

Feel like a trip to the country? Then take a trip to next year's Ealing Countryside Weekend will provide two great days out in Ealing’s ‘countryside’ for all the family!

This year’s Ealing Countryside Weekend was held at at Berkeley Fields  Horsenden Hill, Horsenden Lane, Greenford.

The event was organised by Ealing’s Parks and Countryside Service and  began at 12 noon on Saturday and ran through till 8pm on Sunday. Entrance free.

Arena attractions

After last year’s outstanding success, step back in time again as the central arena comes alive with drill displays and battles between the Cavaliers and Roundheads. There’ll also be gun dog displays, shire horses, classic cars and bikes from Greenford historic bike museum and community dancers.

Park in a tent

Appreciate beauty and simplicity with this year’s theme - a reproduction of a Japanese Garden. Displays from the local Japanese school and the art of Japanese flower arranging. Learn about the work of the Parks and Countryside Service. Also on show - displays from ~Ealing in Bloom’ entrants, the council’s parks development team and arboriculture department. Outside the tent will be a ‘real’ allotment created by local groups and individuals.

Learn a craft

Craftspeople will be at work to show their skills - from blacksmiths to potters, quilters to basket-makers, spinners to weavers and wood crafters. Watch them at work or try your own hand. Of course, quality crafts will also be on sale with over 100 stalls selling different products and produce.

The shire horses are returning again to Ealing - another chance to take a ride in a horse-driven cart. For children, there’ll be the ever-popular ponies waiting to be ridden. The animal marquee has both farmyard and exotic animals. This year there’ll be goats, polish chickens, pigs, sheep, ponies and rabbits. Don’t forget the gun dog demonstrations in the main arena.

Glamour pup

Even your pets are provided for at this year’s Weekend! Show your dog on Sunday 2nd July. Both pedigree and novelty classes will be judged from 1pm in the animal arena. (In aid of Battersea Dogs Home).

Fun on the water

The colourful regatta of boats and waterway attractions on the Grand Union Canal lets you try paddling a canoe or take up the challenge of the dragon boats. Alternatively, enjoy a leisurely cruise in the traditional narrowboat ~\Vind in the Willows’. There’ll be a variety of historic boats and leisure craft moored up. For the first time ever the unique Puppet Theatre Barge will be appearing with performances on board. Advance booking is recommended.

The Waterways Village will have a range of waterway and wildlife displays and traditional crafts. Activities include Roses and Castles painting, Rosie and Jim badge making, wildlife colouring and rag-rug making.

A special thanks to  British Waterways, Ealing Canoe Club and Willowtree Narrow Boats for all their help in organising the canal and waterway activities.

This year’s Ealing Countryside Weekend will be alive with music and dance. For 2000 we have brought together an exciting array of music and dance from around the world. The Courage Music Stage provides the perfect backdrop for an expanded music programme where visitors can enjoy two great days of musical entertainment.

Green village

A yellow submarine, composting road show and local, regional and national wildlife and conservation. organisations will provide the focal point for this green village. Question local experts and view the technology of the future.

To recharge your batteries thre’ll be plenty of food and drink on offer. We welcome back the Courage Black Bull Traveling Inn a traveling pub offering all the comforts of a real local where visitors will be able to enjoy a refreshing pint.

This year’s varied cuisine includes Caribbean, barbecue and oriental, Indian, a tea tent, as well as perennial favorites - burgers and hot dogs, pizza, doughnuts, candy floss, popcorn and ice cream.

Hoe-down on the hill

If you enjoy dancing are just looking for a great night out of music, dance. food and drink then the evening of Saturday 1st July will be a night to remember. This year we are proud to present an incredible evening of country music and dance under the stars, with ‘Jiggery Pokery’.
