8th August

Ealing Jazz Festival - Tuesday the 8th August.

12.3Opm Harlem Airshaft

Chris Hodgkins (trumpet/leader) Mike Nash (trombone) John Evans (clarinet) Max Brittain (guitar) John Ferguson (bass) Clive Pracy (drums)

Chris Hodgkins’ Armstrong-inspired trumpet fronts this solid jump-style band. Featuring up-to-date arrangements of 1940’s and 50’s swing standards, this outfit more than adequately fills an oft-neglected niche. Popular Ellington and Basie small group pieces should be well represented in the programme.

2.l5pm Matt Ross Trio

Matt Ross (piano) Peter Morgan (bass) Don Lawson (drums)

Matt Ross inevitably delights with a sophisticated musical tour de force. In this programme devoted to Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn compositions, he is supported by an acknowledged master of the bowed bass and a major jazz drummer who has played virtually every style of music known to man.

615pm Brian Lemon (piano) - in the Bar Tent

730pm Tough Tenors featuring Ray Gelato and Alex Garnett

Ray Gelato (tenor sax) Alex Garnett (tenor sax) Richard Busiakiewicz (piano) Simon Thorpe (bass) Tom Gordon (drums)

From the Swing Era through to modern times the two-tenor combination has thrilled the listening public. Ray Gelato and Alex Garnett, with their contrasting but complementary styles, are the latest distinguished exponents of this exciting format. But in the heat of the moment, don’t overlook the swinging rhythm team.

8.45pm Brian Lemon (piano) - in the Bar Tent

9.l5pm Jack Honeyborne Quintet

John Barnes (saxes/clarinet) Derek Wadsworth (trombone) Jack Honeyborne (piano) Ian Scott-Taylor (bass) Tony Kinsey (drums)

For those who like a chuckle with their serious jazz listening, Messrs Honeyborne and Barnes return to the Festival to create their usual verbal jocularity. Derek Wadsworth’s smooth trombone, together with the positive bass work of lan Scott-Taylor and Tony Kinsey’s propulsive drumming, completes a truly entertaining quintet.
