13th AugustEaling Jazz Festival - Sunday the 13th August. 2.00pm Gary Crosby’s New Nu Troop Sean Corby (trumpet/flugeihorn) Soweto Kinch (alto sax) Robert Mitchell (piano) Gary Crosby (bass) Daniel Crosby (drums) Gary Crosby presents a brand Nu Troop this year! These superb young musicians will be offering a radical change in musical direction for the 21st century. Gary is aiming at the cutting edge of jazz by introducing a strong bias towards a variety of ethnic musics. 3.45pm Robin Jones Latin Jazz Sextet Steve Waterman (trumpet) Nick Walker (tenor sax) Chris Kibble (piano) Gerry Hunt (bass guitar) Robin Jones (congas) Adam Riley (drums/timbales) This high-powered Latin jazz group has been drawn from Robin Jones King Salsa band. However, this is not a cut-down version of the big band but a separate entity exemplifying the authentic sounds of Latin jazz fusion and this can be heard to great effect on its latest CD Latin Underground. 5.00pm Bill le Sage (piano) - in the Bar Tent 5.30pm Claire Davies Quintet Claire Davies (voice) Michael Coates (tenor/soprano sax) Mike Gorman (piano) Arnie Somogyi (bass) Eryl Roberts (drums) A thoughtful interpreter of words and music, Claire Davies brings a rare intensity to seldom heard exquisite ballads and adept jazz phrasing to uptempo numbers. Accompanying her in a high-energy set, also featuring songs in a funky Latin groove, are high-class instrumentalists adding rich tonal colourings and free-wheeling improvisation within a sensitive rhythmic framework. 6.45pm Bill le Sage (piano) in the Bar Tent 7.15pm Bernie Bloom’s Hot Four Bernie Bloom (vibes) Gary Potter (lead guitar) Malcolm Harrison (rhythm guitar) Peter Hughes (bass) Featuring the inventive guitar prowess of Django-inspired Gary Potter, Bernie Bloom’s much-loved band presents a Hot Club of France style blended with the easy Swing of the Red Norvo school of vibes playing. Malcolm Harrison and Pete Hughes provide the driving rhythm forever associated with Joseph Reinhardt and Louis Vola. 9.00pm Sound of 17 Big Band Pete Condon, Lawrie Brown, Enrico Tomasso, Ron Humphries (trumpets) Andy Flaxman, Adrian Fry, Mons Ekstrom (trombones) Chris Gower (bass trombone) Eddie Mordue, John Sands (alto saxes) Geoff Carter, Phil Day (tenor saxes) Mike Rubie (baritone sax) Alan Berry (piano) Ken Rankine (bass) Dick Esmond (drums/leader) Eileen Scott (vocals) Sixteen men swinging and Eileen Scott singing’ once again brings the Festival to a close with many of the Ealing-based band’s most-requested numbers. Together with the addition of specially-written scores, along with a glance back at the Swing Era and a look to the future, this signifies the perfect climax to Ealing Jazz Festival 2000.
