11th AugustEaling Jazz Festival - Friday the 11th August. 12.3Opm Foxley’s Fraternity Mike Cotton (trumpet) Dick Charlesworth (alto sax/clarinet) Campbell Burnap (trombone) Ray Foxley (piano) John Rees-Jones (bass) Don Cook (drums) ‘Come on and hear!' invites Ray Foxley. The Fraternity gathers for a feast of swinging jazz -in fact, several ‘eras-ful’ with something for everyone and nothing for no-one. Rollicking, romping jazz of the highest quality is the order of the day, with a few surprises along the way. 2.l5pm Pete Wareham Quartet Pete Wareham (tenor sax) Liam Noble (piano) Sam Burgess (bass) Sebastian Rochford (drums) Fresh from a successful UK-wide Jazz Services tour, Pete Wareham’s band plays contemporary modern jazz sourced from Louis Armstrong through to John Coltrane. Pete says that elements of world music and funk also have a place in the group’s repertoire. A new album is due for release later this year. 6.15pm Matt Ross (piano) - in the Bar Tent 7.30pm Café Noir Ron Drake (tenor sax/clarinet) Mike Piggott (violin) Nils Solberg (guitar) John Coverdale (guitar) Harry Hussey (accordian) Gerry Higgins (bass/leader) Probably the only band currently keeping the French café jazz style alive. Featuring the virtuoso reeds of Ron Drdke, Café Noir plays in a relaxed, charmant and swinging manner. Whatever numbers this band plays, the lively spirit of the late Johnny Van Derrick inevitably springs to mind. 8.45pm Matt Ross (piano) - in the Bar Tent 9.l5pm Keith Waithe & The Macusi Players (see local bands - Macusi players pages) Keith Waithe (vocal effects/flutes) Helen McDonald (vocals/percussion) Robert Mitchell (keyboards/piano) Eustace Williams (electric bass) Jojo Yates (kora/Ghanaian percussion) Nana Appiah (Ghanaian drums/percussion/ vocals) Daniel Crosby (kit drums) To celebrate the Macusi Players’ 10th consecutive appearance at the Festival, Keith Waithe has written an Afrobeat jazz suite especially for the group to premiere this year. The distinctive sound of this popular fusion band can be relived with their CD Live at the 1999 Eating Jazz Festival.
