| One of the 'bluest' routes in this book, with
easy walking mostly beside the River Brent, which in its lower stretches
forms part of the Grand Union Canal. It is very green too, passing through
riverside shrubbery, several parks and open spaces. Much of the route is
used by Sections 7 and 8 of the Capital Ring. Starting from a rather
undistinguished spot beside the A40 (Western Avenue), not far from Hanger
Lane station, you set off through Brentham Open Space and Pitshanger Park.
There is some roadwalking at this end, but after Ruislip Road East there is
hardly any, though you pass underneath two very busy main roads and the M4
motorway. The walk through Brent Lodge Park is very pretty, with the spire
of Hanwell church rising between the trees. You pass under the impressive
Wharncliffe Viaduct, where express trains cross high above en route to
Wales, and testing your echoes is a popular pastime. You join the Grand
Union Canal towpath at the foot of Hanwell Locks, and pass Osterley Lock on
the way to Brentford. This is a fairly busy section of the canal and there
is a good chance of seeing some waterborne action. A large concrete plaque
beside the towpath near Osterley Lock proudly records that a British
Waterways team won a pile-driving competition in 1959. Brentford Canal Basin
is quite deserted nowadays. The towpath passes through a covered quay, then
crosses a miniature 'wobbly bridge' over the dock entrance to finish at
Brentford High Street. It connects here with the Thames Path National Trail,
which continues along the Brent on a diversion from the big river. |
