The
lovely weather on Spring Bank Holiday Monday brought out about a hundred hardy
walkers to reinstate the annual Beating the Bounds of Hanwell sponsored walk,
organised by members of the Hanwell Carnival Committee as a fundraising event -
and as long as everyone remembers to send in their sponsorship money to the
Carnival Secretary, it is hoped that the total amount could be approaching
£1,000!
Taking
a route past all the remaining ancient boundary stones in Hanwell, and guided by
a fascinating information pack giving local history details, The Mayor and
Mayoress of Ealing, Cllr. and Mrs Dave Bond, together with the Carnival Queen,
led the main group of sponsored walkers at lunchtime from The Fox, Green Lane,
which is situated on the Grand Union Canal, forming part of the old parish
boundary. It was then up to the Carnival Princess to head the children’s
section of the walk, the last couple of miles from St Mary’s Church, along the
River Brent, under the famous Victorian viaduct, and back to The Fox, in time
for an evening BBQ with music in the Beer Garden.
The Carnival Committee would like to thank the many people from all over the
Borough taking part in the walk, who were rewarded for their sponsorship by a
certificate. We hope to see you all, and many more people too, at this year’s
Hanwell Carnival in Elthorne Park on Saturday 16th June.
